Hello, it’s nice to meet you!
My name is Ceara and I’m the proud crazy dog lady that runs this blog. I know that you’re really here for the dogs (to be fair, so am I), but I thought I should take the time to tell you about me and why I started this blog.
I started working at a veterinarian’s office as a teenager and really thought that I wanted to be a vet myself. I was very lucky to have that opportunity, but I struggled with assisting euthanasia and ultimately decided that being a vet was not the right profession for me. I went on to complete bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biology. During this time, I volunteered at several different animal shelters and lived with a few different dogs. Now, I’m volunteering and adopting dogs while I pursue a Ph.D.
I grew up with dogs and I was forcefully drawn to them, even as a child. We had quite a few dogs over the years including a rottweiler (Michaela), a lab/hound mix (Bubba), a black lab (Ozzie), and a pibble (Vadar). Michaela passed a long time ago. Bubba and Ozzie made it to their golden years and passed recently in 2018. Vadar was only six when he very suddenly passed from lymphoma. While all of these dogs have been my best friends and the soft, fuzzy rafts that hold me afloat, Vadar was my heart dog. Eventually, I will write a whole post about Vadar, but for now let’s just say that he’s the reason that I kept volunteering and why I adopt old dogs.
In 2018, I moved to the Midwest, rented a house with a fenced in yard, and started adopting my very own dogs. Since then, I have opened my home to three dogs: Tiger Lily, Tessa, and Honey. These three lovely ladies have something very special in common… they’re all seniors! I will write full posts about each dog, but here is a little background to help you get familiar with them. My first senior was Tiger Lily (age 10), an American bulldog mix. She was with me for 2 months before she passed. Tessa was my second (age 11), a lab mix. She had spent 6.5 YEARS at the shelter before I took her home. She passed in September 2019. Honey is my current senior (age 10), a lab/terrier mix.
My goal for this blog is to share what I have learned about shelter dogs through my experiences as an animal shelter volunteer and dog adopter. I also want to share my dogs’ stories because they truly deserve it. I hope that the posts I share on this blog can convince at least one person to take a chance on a senior dog, a special needs dog, or any shelter dog. I truly believe that there is a person for every dog and a dog for every person. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
